Meet the Director

Diane M. McFarlane holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education and a minor in Music Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Her first teaching job was in Leslie, Michigan and she has since taught vocal music at Tamassee-Salem Middle and High School in South Carolina. Diane is currently in her twenty-eighth year of teaching high school vocal music. The past twenty-six years have been at Seneca High School where Diane directs the Women's Chorus,  Honors Women's Chorus, Men's Chorus, Honors Chorale, Madrigal Singers and teaches Advanced Placement Music Theory. Her choirs have received superior ratings and various first place awards at state and national festivals.

Diane's students have continued their vocal studies at The Juilliard School, Eastman Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, Manhattan School of Music, North Carolina School for the Arts, Curtis Institute of Music, Florida State University, Stillman College, Furman University, University of South Carolina, Charleston Southern University, College of Charleston, Lander University, Anderson University, Clemson University, Lee University, Winthrop University, Southern Wesleyan University, Converse College, Wofford College, North Greenville College, Erskine College, Presbyterian College, and Brevard College.

In October of 2000, Diane was recognized by the Music Educators National Conference as one of two outstanding high school choral music teachers in the state of South Carolina. She has been recognized numerous times as a member of Who's Who Among American High School Teachers and the National Honor Roll for American Teachers and was selected Seneca High School's Teacher of the Year in 1995. Diane is the Seneca High School Fine Arts Department Chairperson, has served on the S.C. State Senior High Committee, has served as the All-State Audition Chairperson and also serves as an adjudicator for selection to the S.C. All-State Chorus. Diane was President of the South Carolina Choral Division for 2005-07. She has held roles in local community theater productions and has sung with the Foothills Chorale. A member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, National Educator's Association, American Choral Director's Association and  National Association for Music Education, Diane was selected in 1996 to sing under the direction of Robert Shaw at Carnegie Hall.

 

Diane spends a portion of her summers working for the Educational Testing Service as a Question Leader, assisting teachers in correcting Advanced Placement Music Theory exams. She is also a contributing author for a book in publication by ETS to assist teachers and their students with being more successful on the AP Music Theory Exam. In 2002, Diane was nominated for the Walt Disney American Teacher Award. She has also presented a session on being one of the nation's Top School Districts for Music Education at the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development Conference in Chicago.   Diane also qualified for National Board Certification from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards in 2002.   She has received renewal status through 2022.  The Seneca High School Class of 2013 selected Diane as their High School Honor Teacher. Diane enjoys reading, traveling and sharing time with friends.  

 

Diane credits her father, the late Don McFarlane for her ongoing passion to teach vocal music.  He was her high school choral teacher for three years and is her life long mentor.
